Frank Cannon on R2Kast: Rural Crime, Farm Security and the Demeter Initiative
Through Close the Farm Gate, the aim has always been to bring rural voices into conversation and share knowledge from across the rural community.
Now we’re taking it further. Our Programme Director, Frank Cannon, recently appeared on R2Kast to discuss rural crime, farm security and the Demeter Initiative.
The focus was towards the changing nature of rural crime, understanding vulnerabilities on farms, and taking a practical, layered approach to security.
Rural crime is no longer a financial issue; the impact of incidents equally affects the physical and mental wellbeing of those living and working in rural communities.
The Demeter Initiative takes this wider view into consideration and recognises that rural crime requires a collaborative strategy. It brings together farming, policing, government, insurers, food retailers, academia and protective security consultants to strengthen rural resilience and reduce exposure to crime risk.
At its heart is a simple principle: move left of the event by reducing the likelihood of an incident while ensuring that appropriate response and enforcement remain part of the wider crime risk management system.
Rural crime awareness starts with valuable conversations, and this is one worth listening to.
